<mods:note>Mary Anne Estlin writes for her father, John Bishop Estlin, to say that he could not produce a suitable essay for the Liberty Bell, "his habit having been always to write with some stated object." Additionally, his health is not good at present. She emphasizes her father's continued devotion to the anti-slavery cause. She refers especially to "the Unitarian reply to the clerical invitation which is in progress" and to his efforts for the publication of Frederick Douglass's Narrative in France. They thought it would be "impolitic to make ourselves prominent as A.S. advocates by applications for aid for the Bazaar at the very time that my Father is giving offence to many by representing his views of the duty of the ministers & others in relation to the question." They are therefore not soliciting, merely receiving voluntary contributions.</mods:note>
