Original copy of royal grant of hidalguia or nobility, issued by Juana la Loca of Castile and her son Charles I. Included are testimonies and the decision rendered in a civil suit begun in 1514 by Rodrigo de Oviedo, resident of Almagro, Spain. Rodrigo claimed exemption from payment of taxes, one of the privileges enjoyed by hidalgos, members of the lower Spanish nobility.

Collation: Parchment, fol. 26 ; 1²⁶ ; modern pencil foliation in lower corner.
Layout: 1 column, 40 lines; bounding and writing lines in red ink.
Script: Written in Southern textualis formata in brown ink. Cursive inscriptions on fol. 1; 3 lines of cursive follow end of text.
Decoration: On fol. 1 at top the divine monogram flanked by putti above the historiated and illuminated letter D containing portraits of the seated queen Juana and her son Charles V (Ist of Spain); in left margin is the royal coat of arms and in lower margin flanked by angels, that (presumably) of the litigant. On fol. 22 a historiated 10-line initial H showa 3 officials seated above the gilt legend "ALCALDES E NOTARIO". Fol. 23v includes a 12-line initial P historiated with the equestrian portrait of Charles on horseback, his name CARLOS in blue letters on horses's crupper. Gilt and colored 4-, 5-, 7- and 8-line initials on fols. 5, 7v, 9, 11, 12v, 14v, 20v, and 23.
Binding: Single gathering, stiched through fold, through which also is drawn the original seal cord of yellow, white, red, and green silk (broken with lead seal missing), augmented with later braided hemp cord which holds gathering into later semi-limp vellum covers with hemp fore-edge ties. Upper corners of most leaves chewed or burned away, not affecting text.
