Richard A. Hamilton (1909 - 1997) was born and raised in Greenfield, Massachusetts. He attended Boston University and with his brother ran Hamilton’s Shoe Store, which his father had started. He and his wife retired to Maine. Paul Jenkins recorded this interview with Richard Hamilton while conducting research for his book, The Conservative Rebel: A Social History of Greenfield, Massachusetts, published by the town of Greenfield in 1982. In this interview, Hamilton recalls his childhood in Greenfield, including what it was like before cars were a common sight in town, winter activities, and businesses. The cassette tape on which this interview was recorded is very degraded and the recording has a great deal of background noise.
