Published two centuries after his death, this small print depicts Shakespeare's round, open-air Globe Theater situated on the Southwark side of the Thames River, as well as a neighboring arena, The Bear Garden. Abraham Ortelius' atlas entitled "Theater of the World" provided maps as stage settings for global events. William Shakespeare's theater, aptly named the Globe, was a venue for human imagination and performance not bound by geographic borders or distances. Its motto was "the whole world moves the actor," and its sign bore an image of Hercules carrying the world on his shoulders.
