NAACP-Berkshire Branch Oral History Project is a collection of ten interviews conducted between 2016 and 2019. The purpose of the project was to collect stories of African American elders and leaders in the region. This phase was meant to be a pilot project and was initiated by NAACP-Berkshire Branch member Len Kates, with involvement of board members, including board president Dennis Powell. The interviews were conducted in a life-narrative format. One common and planned discussion topic dealt with the experience of living to see the first African American President of the United States.<br><br>The Housatonic Heritage Oral History Center at Berkshire Community College co-coordinated this project. The Oral History Center is a project of the Upper Housatonic Valley National Heritage Area (Housatonic Heritage) that serves Western Massachusetts and Northwest Connecticut. The Center helps people plan and implement sustainable oral history projects, as well as properly care for their new and existing collections.
