<mods:abstract>Image of the exterior of the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company at 335 Main Street. One of America's oldest chains, A and Ps were found throughout Holyoke starting in 1898. This photograph was taken around 1931 when the Main Street store opened. The storefront windows and area surrounding the entrance to the grocery are filled with fruits and vegetables of all varieties. The exterior displays are arranged in wire baskets and a wooden bin. The windows are also plastered with advertisements for many household goods. Built in 1911, the architectural elements of this building are indicative of the neo-classic period. This is especially true of the curvaceous engaged columns surrounding the storefront windows, the Grecian key mosaic on the stoop, and the elegant details surrounding the front door. Its awnings have been folded in, perhaps to allow the viewer to clearly see the advertisements. Also visible is the storefront for Breault and Co. Men's Wear. A man in a straw hat, vest and tie stands in front of this door.</mods:abstract>
