A Spanish galleon, stern high in air, is drifting sideways at the mercy of wind and waves upon a rocky coast. As the artist notes on one of the trial proofs, the subject "represents a ship of the Spanish Armada-- the 'Santa Caterina'-- going on the rocks at Collieston." Beyond a gully to the left, some folk are watching the doomed ship.
