Description:
The departure of Columbus from Palos at dawn on September 4, 1492. The fleet was one of three ships; the nearest in the etching is the caravel, Santa Maria, in which Columbus himself sailed. A full-size replica of the Santa Maria is used for celebrations at Palos, and was sketched by the artist in 1932 at Huelva, which is on the opposite side of the river from Palos.

Additional information accompanying item: Scratches in sky entirely eliminated. Clouds have been indicated in sky with charcoal. Value of the water has been drawn in with charcoal and several boats, The Pinta and Nina are indicated in crayon. There is no added work in etching. Added value in crayon on Santa Maria indicated. Line has been removed in wake of nearest boat.
Notes (object):
Trial proof (2). A hard line running diagonally to right from the head of the man at stern of the near boat, and parallel with the gunwale of the boat, has been taken out.
