The departure of Columbus from Palos at dawn on September 4, 1492. The fleet was one of three ships; the nearest in the etching is the caravel, Santa Maria, in which Columbus himself sailed. A full-size replica of the Santa Maria is used for celebrations at Palos, and was sketched by the artist in 1932 at Huelva, which is on the opposite side of the river from Palos.
