Published state. Both balloons slightly accentuated. Touched in several places with strong drypoint. A fallen cross, in the centre of the plate, shows clearly for the first time. Edition of 76 proofs: A, B, C, D, E, F for artist; I-L (British edition); A1-A20 (American edition; and two additional proofs (not numbered or signed in lower margin) for submission to censor. In ink, on the face of one, "Censor"; on the other, "Proof for Censor." The former bears inscription, "Passed by Censor. A. N. Lee, Major, G. S. , G. H. Q. , Id. , 30/4/17," and is in the V. & A. M. Proof C (B. M. ).
