Charles E. Monroe in his second optometry office, located at 1456 Main Street, in Southbridge from 1905 to approximately 1931. Monroe received his degree from the Chicago Ophthalmic College which is on display on the wall. A copy of the American Optical Company's print 'Southbridge Spectacles View' [included elsewhere in Digital Treasures] is over the wooden doorway. The room is wired for electricity with two overhead lamps and the braided wires are on view. There is a candlestick telephone on top of the writing desk, with several messages clipped to the speaker. Dr. Monroe is seated at work, at his writing desk. In the foreground is a table with several papers and three glasses cases awaiting pick up perhaps. The wooden organizer is contiguous to the desk. Behind Dr. Monroe is an iron steam heat radiator. The room has wooden wainscoting, on the lower half of the walls. The room has three windows, one a bay type, on view with blinds. The business name 'Chas. E. Monroe Ophthalmic Optician' reflected in reverse. In the office section of the room, there are several photographs on the wall. One framed photograph, over the writing desk shows two young children. There is a hanging stand with an umbrella suspended from it.
