<mods:abstract>Charles E. Monroe in his first optometry office located in the Barnes Block on the corner of Main and Chapin Streets, in Southbridge from approximately 1885-1905. Thereafter he had offices at 1456 Main St., from 1905 to approximately 1931. Monroe received his degree from the Chicago Ophthalmic College. Dr. Monroe is seated pensively at his writing desk, with his examination room in the foreground. The room is divided by a wooden ornamental railing where the examination apparatuses are arranged. There are two chair both made of wood, one with arms. In between is a table with an open shelf underneath and a mirror; a small round occasional table with a china dish on top; and a square table with a potted palm. There is a bifold screen and a chair, with a small examination area to the right of the image. The room appears to have gas lighting with two glass light shades, hanging from a tin type ceiling surrounded by molding. The room has three windows, one a bay type, on view with blinds. The business name 'Chas. E. Monroe Ophthalmic Optician' reflected in reverse. In the office section of the room, there are several photographs on the wall. One framed photograph, over the writing desk shows two young children. There is a hanging stand with an umbrella suspended from it.</mods:abstract>
