Description:
The Battle Monument at Old Bennington, Vermont, is a magnificent shaft of gray-blue dolomite, thirty seven feet square at the base and including the metal star at the top, 306 feet, 4 1/2 inches high. The entrance hall, twenty feet square and thirty nine feet high, is a landing for the stairs. Between the entrance hall and grand Lookout floor there are thirty four flights with 412 steps. The architect was I. Philipp Rinn of Boston. The corner stone was laid on August 16, 1887. The monument was dedicated on August 19, 1891. It commemorates the Battle of Bennington, fought on August 16, 1777. The cost of the monument was $112,000.00. The highest Battle Monument in the world.
