- Title:
- Letter from Francis Bishop, Liverpool, [England], to Mary Anne Estlin, 1854 Aug[ust] 27
- Description:
-
Francis Bishop writes to Mary Anne Estlin in regards to antislavery news. Mr. Chamerovzow has been talking to men "whose minds are full of prejudice deepened by time & habit" and encourages those to give aid to the American Anti-Slavery Society. He writes that he is always glad to see Mr. Parker Pillsbury and wishes he stayed longer when he visits. He discusses the struggle that American abolitionists endure in America and says that "many persons who in this country cheer A.S. sentiments...w[oul]d not stand one hour in Am[erica] against the storm of censure & indignation...from Church & State." He writes that this makes Pillsbury less patient when dealing with "the half converted." The Manchester meeting is satisfactory, according to Bishop. He believes Pillsbury would shrink from his sympathy with Garrison. He writes of antislavery meetings at the Boston Bazaar and the N.Y. Vigilance Conference and writes of Barker's lectures being very coarse & offensive against the Bible. He writes that Barker states, "his only triumph was a much better book than the Bible!" He leaves for Edinburgh the following day.
