Daniel Otis confides in William Lloyd Garrison his disappointment with Father Mathew, and lambasts him for failing to strive for the liberty of American slaves while endeavoring to free those afflicted with the "self-imposed" species of slavery (as Otis refers to alcohol). Otis chastises Father Mathew and others who value popular opinion, influence, and acclaim over principles.
