In this printed statement, A. A. Phelps protests against the part of the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society's report, which refers to the "Clerical Appeal." Following Phelps’s statement is another brief statement signed by four individuals: S.G. Shipley, Joseph H. Eayrs, James C. White, and Gotham Horton. These are followed by “Reply of the corresponding secretary” in which William Lloyd Garrison defends his position and quotes various other published opinions in agreement with his own. On the margin of the manuscript, handwritten notes (by Maria W. Chapman?) criticize Phelps’ statement.
