A 56-ton magnet coil, largest ever manufactured in the U.S., is gently lowered by a crane at a General Electric factory here. Two such coils were shipped this week by barge to Virginia, where they will be used in a new NASA atom-smasher. When completed, the atom-smasher's magnet will have a pulling power greater than 3,500 tons-- strong enough to lift 30 large locomotives.
