Darius Cobb was the son of Rev. Sylvanus Cobb and Eunice Hale Waite, he had a twin brother Cyrus. He married Laura Maria Lillie, daughter of Thomas Edes Lillie and Harriet M. Codman. He was a noted portrait and landscape painter, as well as musician, singer, poet, lecturer, lithographer, and art critic. Portraits of note include Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wilson, the Vice-President to Ulysses S. Grant, and Senator Charles Sumner. Together with his brother he produced the Cambridge Soldiers Monument and published a book The Veteran of the Grand Army, based on their experiences in the Civil War while serving in the Massachusetts 44th Infantry Regiment. Cyrus' wife was Emma Lillie, Laura's sister, and the four were married in a double ceremony by Rev. Sylvanus Cobb.
