This unsigned oil painting was done circa 1830 by an unknown American artist. The portrait is of Hannah Gould Lake (1809-1898) and was an engagement portrait for her marriage to Eleazer Lake on 20 December 1832. The Gould family is a prominent one in Topsfield history. In 1644, Zaccheus Gould settled in New Meadows, the area that would become Topsfield. He was responsible for persuading his friend, the Reverend Mr. William Perkins of Gloucester, to lead the first congregation separated from Ipswich's congregation. This ultimately led to Topsfield becoming a town separate from Ipswich.
