Notes:
The mission of The American Red Star Animal Relief Program, known today as American Human Animal Emergency Services, was to help and care for sick and wounded animals. The armed services used the program during World War I, when nearly a quarter of a million horses and mules performed invaluable services. They were used in direct combat and to transport supply wagons, ambulances, water carts, light artillery and traveling kitchens equipped with food.
