This photograph and others like it (FIC HT 10 through 15) show what is called a "tunnel shield", used for tunneling in mud. There is no evidence that it was used at the Hoosac Tunnel, however--therefore, these photographs may relate to a different dig.-- Gary Smith, May 2003.
