Inside the Spencer Wire Company in Spencer, Massachusetts, wire workers stand amongst coils of wire. The wire Industry in Spencer developed around 1820 to meet the needs of the card factories in Leicester, Massachusetts. Mills were at two locations on Turkey Hill Brook, called Upper Wire Village and Lower Wire Village. By 1874 the mills of Richard Sugden, the largest of the wire mills in Spencer, could produce one ton of fine wire a day. In full operation the mill employed 50 workers and produced more card wire than any other mill in the United States at that time.
