One of many houses built post-Civil War during the expansion of the shoe and other industries. This was the home of Sumner Holmes, born 1833, a long-time superintendent of the so-called "Big Shop", E. and A. H. Batcheller Co., shoe manufacturers. Three men, eight women, and a young girl are standing or sitting on the front porch steps.
