Letter from William P. Powell, Liverpool, [England], to Samuel May, April 5th, 1854
Description:
Powell speaks strongly against the pro-slavery Americans he has seen on the ships in Liverpool Harbor. He tells May that "American liberty is a mockery, British liberty is an existing fact." Powell likens Frederick Douglass to Judas and Benedict Arnold, but affirms that the anti-slavery cause will survive such betrayals, for he believes that the U.S. Constitution guarantees the citizenship rights of African Americans.
