Bulk of the material pertains to the defense of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, anarchists who were tried and executed for murder, and includes "office testimony" not included in the published transcript.
The Harvard Law School Library has no documentation relating to a specific donor for the Sacco-Vanzetti Case Records. It is has been suggested that two Harvard Law School graduates were responsible for the donation of the defense and prosecution files, which make up half of the collection. William G. Thompson is thought to be the source of the defense files. Thompson (HLS 1891) became the lead defense attorney after Fred H. Moore withdrew from the trial in 1924. Dudley P. Ranney (HLS 1915) is thought to be the source of the prosecution files. Ranney served as Assistant District Attorney for the Commonwealth during the final stages of the case.
