<mods:note>The letters from Mrs. Helen Eliza Garrison and others took 16 days to reach William Lloyd Garrison. He was glad to hear that Miss Houghton's treatment [therapeutic use of magnetism] had effected an improvement in Mrs. Helen E. Garrison's physical condition. William L. Garrison's own health has greatly improved. Henry Villard's father is very ill, so Fanny may not be able to return to America with William L. Garrison. Garrison mentions his visit with John Mawson. Garrison writes: "Newspapers throughout the Kingdom, of almost every religious and political persuasion, are vieing [sic] with each other in extolling my labors, sacrifices and successes in the cause of the American slaves. ...The manner in which I have every where been received has taken me wholly by surprise." He praises Mrs. Elizabeth Pease Nichol's hospitality. He gives his schedule of engagements, which includes being presented with the "freedom of the city" of Edinburgh.</mods:note>
