The temperature is almost down to zero. William Lloyd Garrison received a cordial reception at the Hammond's cottage. Garrison is feeling quite well. Garrison sat for his portrait painting three times "and already such progress has been made as to warrant the belief that success will crown friend Hammond's efforts." Garrison has lectured in the region on slavery and nonresistance. He has drawn large, respectable audiences in spite of Mr. Luther Lee's "mad-dog cry of 'infidel.'" A Second Advent woman in the audience endorsed William Lloyd Garrison. Garrison reports: "There are a number here, who embrace the views of Mr. Miller, and continue steadfast in his doctrine. They are 'come-outers' from the churches and hold a separate meeting of their own."
