Joan Egleston Appleton (1912-2006) holds the leashes of seven dogs. Two of the dogs, greyhounds, wear dog coats; the remaining five dogs include two dachshunds and three terriers. The group stands on open ground in a wintry field near the edge of leafless woods. In the distance are winter fields and several white structures with a line of trees beyond.
