On back: Washington Mass Multi Resource Nomination, Washington Mountain Road Washington MA 01223, View west of tavern from road. Notes: 1 1/2 story Federal/Trans. Greek Revival. Once had barn north of house, now gone. Woodshed on south side of kitchen ell, removed post 1955. About 1771, a tavern was built on this spot by Daniel Foot and chilled attendants of the church and town meetings next door adjourned here to receive warmth and cheer before they returned home. The tavern business was carried out here by others until its purchase in 1794 by Moses Byxbe. After 1800 the tavern was continued for 25 years by others, including Jasper Morgan. Edwin Dennison Morgan, son of Jasper, was on Feb 8 1811 and later became first chairman of Republican National Committee, and the Governor of NY. This house has been said to be the early tavern and birthplace of E.D. Morgan, but it is actually balloon construction, built sometime after 1830.
