From catalogue raisonné: This feature was first named Mount Broderick by Josiah Whitney and his California State Geological Survey associates in honor of U.S. senator David C. Broderick (1820-1859) and was known as such by Watkins. An 1871 map listed it as "Mt. Broderick or Cap of Liberty." By 1878 Broderick's name had been removed and reassigned to a nearby, less dramatic peak. Snow's Hotel (see cat. no. 244) is visible at bottom left. This view was made looking northeast from a position approximately halfway between Emerald Pool and Clark Point on the present-day John Muir Trail.
