Original letter dated October 24, 1918 by Mark L. Purinton, a Buckland, Mass. native and a soldier in World War I. Printed at the top of the stationary is, "American YMCA On Active Service with the American Expeditionary Force.' The letter is addressed to Purinton's friend, Howard Jenkins in Ashfield, Mass., and measures about 10-3/4 inches wide by 8-1/4 inches high.The letter was sent from France, presumably from Perigueux Dordogne where Purinton was stationed at the time of writing. He describes the countryside, the noticeable age and narrow, dark streets of the city, the people, livestock, and local sawmill operations, comparing these with the way of life he and his friend have in the United States.
