In the 1930 U.S. Federal Census, Herbie is listed as age 58, born about 1872 in New York. His occupation is listed as a merchant of honey. Mr. Spear was also involved in the manufacture of maple syrup. his syrup, sold by Simard & Son Isale of Lewiston, Me., was tested and the results published by the Maine Agricultural Experiment Station in their 1936 annual report. Herbie converted what is believed to have been an old one-room school house on his property into a honey house. He had a small stand out front by the road with a sign. A Buckland native who was a child in the 1930's told us that Herbie's honey tasted great! His honey house still stands as of this writing in March 2010. It is located a few hundred yards west of Route 112 near the Buckland/Ashfield town line. Old maps refer to this location as Mrs. Spears Road.
