Provenance: Sold by American Art/Anderson, 20 December 1920, lot 563 (Schoenberg Database of Manuscripts); offered by Maggs Bros. in 1928 (cat. 500, no. 142; SDBM 10745). Bought by James P. R. Lyell (d. 1948) that same year, his bookplate inside front cover with motto "Viam aut inveniam aut faciam" and his pencil acquisition notes in lower left corner with date. Subsequently offered by Maggs in 1930 (cat. 542, no. 116; SDBM 10781) and 1940 (cat. 687, nr. 221; SDBM 37499).

Collation: Paper, with crowned column watermark very similar to Briquet 4408 (Tyrol, 1460s), fol. 109 ; 1¹²⁻¹ (1st leaf lacking, probably cancelled), 2-8¹², 9¹²⁺² (last two are singletons) ; signed with arabic numerals in brown ink (poss. original), lower right corner of the last verso of each quire; bifolia signed in the first half of each quire as a-f (on versos) or 1-6 (rectos). Modern arabic pencil foliation, upper outer corner each page.
Layout: 2 columns, 33-35 lines. Bounding lines ruled in light plummet.
Script: Written in a gothic cursive in brown ink with red rubrics (fol. 104-109v in different hand, possibly that of Johannes Braxatoris [Johannes Brassart]) .
Decoration: 3- to 5-line initials throughout in green with red infill or vice versa. over 300 pen and wash illustrations throughout, ranging from 1/4- to half page, with a full-page illustration of the crucifixion on fol. 86. Evangelist symbols throughout, many as humans with animal heads; illustrations are of narrative scenes and portraits of evangelists and theologians.
Binding: 15th-century blind-tooled and -rolled leather (possibly sheep) over boards; rebacked, clasp plates present, nailholes from hardware at board centers and corners paper pastedowns, hinges repaired, some wear on covers and disintegrated leather at edges.
