Additional information accompanying item: Below drawing is the following description: "Le Gal. Lafayette possant, le 17 Juin, 1825, la premiere du monument que le reconnaissance, publique fair élever a Boston, en l'honneur du Doctor Waren, et des autres Guerriers Citoyens mort du combat de Bunker's hill, le 17 Juin, 1775." For the laying of the corner stone of the Bunker Hill Monument on June 17, 1825, the Charles River Bridge cancelled all tolls for the day, and the military and Masonic procession reached from City Square back to Boston Common. Col. Samuel Jacques of Charlestown was chief marshal upon the grounds. The cornerstone was laid by the most Worshipful Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, John Abbot. Lafayette stood beside him and received from him the trowel, with which he then spread cement over the stone. He wore a Masonic apron during the ceremony. Prayer was said by the Rev. Joseph Thaxter of Edgartown who had half a century before, stood on almost the same spot praying for Col. Prescott and his men, as well as encouraging them to their duty, and ministering to many who fell in the battle. -- History of the B. H. Mon't Ass'N. pp. 146-50.
