Item Information
Title:
Chestnut Street in winter showing Custom House tower.
Description:
Chestnut Street in winter showing Custom House tower. Chestnut Street was certainly laid out in part before the Battle of Bunker Hill, but was in early days little more than lane from what was called the Salem Turnpike, and was named Shippey Street, to the side door of its only residence, the mansion which later became for many years the home successively of Nathan Adams and his adopted daughter and her husband, the George A. Kettells. Today the charm of the street is due not only to its substantial old houses and double row of ancient elms, but to the beautiful vistas toward Bunker Hill Monument in one direction and toward the Custom House in the other.
