- Description:

Getchell house in blossom time (21 Cordis Street). The painted brick house under the horse chestnut tree fronting on Cordis St. Ave. was built by Charlestown schoolmaster, Abraham Andrews, graduate of Dartmouth. At one time, Mr. Andrews used the building then standing across Cordis St. Ave. for a private boys' school, fitting for Harvard College. The Andrews house was later owned by Miss Susan Getchell, who worked for thirty years in the Charlestown Five Cents Savings Bank. Her nephew, Frank Getchell Neal, an employee for over thirty years and ultimately treasurer of the South Boston Savings Bank, lived here with his wife and son, Frank Getchell, Jr., throughout the latter's boyhood. After Frank, Jr. had graduated from Harvard College, he wrote to the rector of St. John's Church here that as an adolescent he had not appreciated Charlestown. To quote him, in part, "My friends lived elsewhere, and I was ashamed to bring them to my home. It made me quite angry, therefore, when I read your articles in defense of the place, although my father always supported you. I thought that you refused to face facts. . . . I know now that you saw the facts far better than I did. Charlestown spiritually is probably far better off than wealthier communities. I now see its faith and Christian service, and I think you find more of the real religion here than you do in the more comfortable suburbs."
