Description:: Unloading of 17 ton granite base for flag pole. This single block of stone weighing 17 tons was drawn off the floor of the truck to the pavement of the Mall two feet below by a second large truck to which a heavy rope had been attached. The men who placed fresh rollers under the stone as it advanced were protected from danger by a single workman with a block and tackle who paid out rope from a winch connected with the motor on the standing truck. "One of the next things we longed for and looked after was to advance learning . . . [description ends].
