Item Information
- Title:
- Corner of Phipps Street Burial Ground
- Description:
-
Corner of Phipps Street Burial Ground. The following five headstones, left to right: Faithful Rowse, 75 yrs., died in 1664; Mary Greene, age 14 yrs., died 1666; William Bartholomew, aged 78, died 1680; Joanna Convers, age 86, died 1679. The oldest upright stone in the cemetery is the one on the farthest right, John Fownell, 1654. In Frothingham's History of Charlestown, page 94, we read: "The old burial ground is alluded to in the records for the first time in 1648 . . . A few years later, in 1656, the marsh in front of it was sold by the town -- the hill and the street leading to it being reserved to the town's use forever. . . . Time has dealt severely with Charlestown. The monuments of its graveyard, its records, and its silent highways are its only antiquities. The conflagration of 1775 spared not a dwelling-place, and living witnesses testify that the temporary possessors of the town did not even respect this venerable sanctuary of the dead. They used its gravestones on Bunker Hill for the thresholds of the barracks of the soldiers."
