<mods:abstract>American S.S. Savannah. The first steam (and sail) ship to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Built in New York as a sailing vessel, and later fitted with steam engine and removable paddle wheels. Crossed from savannah to Liverpool in 1819 in 25 days using steam only part of the time. 130 feet long, 380 tons, it was estimated that 500 tons of coal would be needed for a completely mechanical crossing.</mods:abstract>
