Mount Auburn Street, looking toward Summer Street, circa 1930's. Methodist church can be seen in the background. Note the use of billboards: Hellman's Real Mayonnaise, Really fresh, and Gulf pride - no-nox, Gulf Oil. The far left shows the corner of the First National Store, one of 10 grocery stores by this name in Watertown. They would use a pole to reach items from the high shelves behind the counter. Snow White: Cleaners, Tailors, Furriers - 52 Mt. Auburn Street, managed by Hyman Goldstein. At 54 Mt. Auburn Street, the Watertown Pharmacy was managed by Henry E. Wixon. B. Frank Fletcher was one of only two optometrists in town, 56 Mt. Auburn Street. He shared a store front with James H. Flagg, jeweler. Flagg lived in Waltham. 56a was the Stand-by Shoe Repair Co. owned by Ghevout Tashjian. They had a sort of box pew you could sit in out of the drafts on your stocking feet while they fixed a shoe on the spot. 58, housed the Gooey Lee Laundry. Rochelle's is a dry cleaner at 58a Mt. Auburn Street, owned by Benjamin Rochelle. It later became a men's clothing store with a tux in the front window. At 60 Mt. Auburn Street, was a husband and wife team. Clara M. Mitchell, had ladies wear and a beauty parlor, while Edward H. White was the proprietor of Ted's Top Grill at 64 Mt. Auburn Street. They lived at 64 Mt. Auburn Street. In-between at 62, Edison Electrical illuminating Co. was managed by Frank Wentworth as a sub-station. At the far right, was the Orchard Beauty Shoppe, 66 Mt. Auburn Street who's proprietor was Susan Iodice.
