The engraving was published in he 1853 Gleason's Pictorial Drawing Room Companion, page 400. The Bleachery was established in 1819 and was part of the Boston Manufacturing Company. This company purchased the Waltham Cotton and Woolen Manufacturing Company and 600 acres on the south side of the Charles River. It was the first large attempt at bleaching cotton goods. The Boston Manufacturing Company had the most profound effect on changing Waltham from a rural farm community into a thriving industrial town. The Company also made improvements in education, streets and housing. The BMC was owned by one of the Lowell mill owners who wished to create an ideal factory community.
