Handwriting on the back reads “Dr. Steele Princ of W. Academy”. George M. Steele was born in Vermont to Joel Steele. He married Susan Swift in 1852, which was recorded in Wilbraham. On the 1880 census, he is listed as the principal of Wesleyan Academy. He died in Illinois in 1902.
