Letter from Oliver Johnson, New York, [N.Y.], to William Lloyd Garrison, 28 Nov[ember], 1857
Description:
Oliver Johnson informs William Lloyd Garrison that he received, on Thanksgiving Day, a letter from W.I. Bowditch informing him of his dismissal from the editorialship of the "Standard" by the Executive Committee. Johnson expresses his complete shock at this decision, and states that the rational he was given was the "commercial panic and the consequent poverty of the Society". Johnson states that he would not have left his position in Philadelphia editing the "Freeman" had he ever dreamed that he would be dismissed from the "Standard" in such fashion.
