Image caption: The six heavy piers and side walls in this hall are of Iowa sandstone. The ceiling is vaulted and covered with a marble mosaic. It is lighted from the windows of the grand staircase. The two corridors on either side of the staircase lead to the entrance of the interior court and to the catalogue room on the left and the periodical room on the right. The floor is white Georgia marble, inlaid with sign of the zodiac in brass.
Notes (historical):
The Boston Public LIbrary's main branch on the west side of Copley Square opened to the public in March 1895. Newton W. Elwell created photographs of the interior and exterior of the building, which were then collected into a published volume entitled "The Boston Public Library" in 1896.
