Title:
Choir in Gardner Hall, The Royal Normal College for the Blind, England
Description:
A photograph of a group of students from Royal Normal College for the Blind in Upper Norwood, England attend choir practice in Gardner Hall. The students are divided by gender: female students are sitting to the left and male students are sitting to the right. In front of them sits a man (possibly E.J. Hopkins, the senior organ professor at the college for twenty five years) playing the piano. A large banner with the words "Musica Lux In Tenebris", meaning "music in the light of darkness", hangs behind them. This motto, adopted when the college was established, was inscribed on a medal awarded for progress in music to Francis Joseph Campbell at the Tennessee School for the Blind in January 1846. This motto influenced the life work of Sir Francis and was an encouragement to many pupils of the college.
