Swimming Exercises, The Royal Normal College for the Blind, England
Description:
A photograph of students at Royal Normal College for the Blind participating in swimming exercises in the Armitage swimming pool, built in 1887 and named after Thomas Armitage, one of the founders of the school. On the right side of the photograph two young men are going down a slide into the pool, one on his back and the other on his front. On the left side of the photograph four young men are huddled, performing a life saving drill. Students from the college often participated in displays at different swimming clubs in London, demonstrating their knowledge of how to save individuals from drowning. In the center of the photograph, in the background, stands Francis Joseph Campbell, another founder of the school. Standing next to the slide is Francis Joseph Campbell's son, Guy Campbell, who went on to become the second principal of the college.
