<mods:abstract>In this letter to Amos A. Phelps, George Jeffrey Tillotson tells of his "domestic affliction," the passing of his wife, which turned his "once happy home" into a "desert" and "house of death." Tillotson shares news of their college classmates, telling Phelps that one "has become as fat as a porpoise down on Cape Cod." He also asks Phelps to make some inqueries about where he could invest $500 or $600 "in some safe state, where I may reasonably expect good interest," suggesting the Boston and Worcester railroad as one option, and asking Phelps to follow through with some specific questions.</mods:abstract>
