James Chalmers was the President from 1917-1930. He was a divinity school graduate of Wheaton College in Illinois, James Chalmers earned a Ph.D. from Eureka College. Prior to coming to the Normal School, he taught English at Ohio State and was president of the Wisconsin State Normal School and South Dakota State College, as well as superintendent of schools in Fitchburg. Horace Mann Hall was built during his tenure. The Chalmers Outdoor Theatre was named in honor of Chalmers.
