Annie Johnson was the first female principal and served from 1866-1875. Johnson received her education at Bowdoin College. She started teaching at age 15 and taught every grade through high school prior to coming to the Normal School. Under her watch, the school building was renovated, steam heat was installed, a third-floor library was added, a two-room Model School was developed, and, most significantly, Normal Hall dormitory was built. In 1875, she accepted the position of principal at Bradford Academy.
