The 1873 town hall designed by Samuel J. F. Thayer, the cornerstone was laid May 1871 with a tin memento box. The granite came from Blue Hill, Maine. The town hall was portrayed in municipal textbooks as America's ideal town hall. This photograph shows the building draped in bunting in honor of the town's 1905 celebration. The building was demolished in 1963 to make way for the present town hall.
